Tom returns with the latest installment to his cowboy series. This is easily his most varied and may be the best of them all. This one mixes some traditional tunes with some new ones by him and some excellent covers. He covers the likes of Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Marty Robbins, Peter La Farge and even Linda Thompson. The centerpiece of the album is a take on Bob Dylan’s “Lily, Rosemary And The Jack Of Hearts” that has him trading verses with Joe Ely and Eliza Gilkyson. As always Andrew Hardin is on hand for some amazing guitar work, not the least of which is Marty Robbins’ “El Paso” where Tom stakes his claim to the song. Elana Fremerman (now known as Elana James) from the Hot Club Of Cowtown plays some mean fiddle and Joel Guzman lays down some beautiful Tex-Mex accordion. Everything works on this album.
Tonight We Ride Seven Curses (Bob Dylan) El Paso (Marty Robbins) All This Way For The Short Ride (Tom Russell, Paul Zaryski) Bucking Horse Moon (Tom Russell, Paul Zaryski) Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts (Bob Dylan) No Telling (Linda Thompson) Bacon Rind/Chief Seattle/The Ballad of Ira Hayes (Peter La Farge) Old Blue East Texas Red (Woody Guthrie) The Ballad of Edward Abbey Little Blue Horse
